Pregnant women are at risk of folate deficiency, needing 5-10 times more than non-pregnant women. Quatrefolic®, as a source of active folate 5-MTHF, can be an adequate source of supplementation, effective in all women regardless of their genetic pattern.
Folate is essential for growth, especially in the embryonic and fetal stages. Folate deficiency has been causally linked with neural tube defects (NTDs) and increased risk of other birth defects that develop very early in pregnancy, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. 5-MTHF is the major form of dietary folate and is the predominant physiological form of folate found in blood and cord blood. Both dietary folate and folic acid must be converted to 5-MTHF by the MTHFR enzyme, potentially polymorphic and less effective in about 40 percent of the world’s population.
Quatrefolic®, already in the form of active folate, bypasses this conversion step and can provide adequate levels of folate in pregnant women, regardless of altered enzyme conversion.
